One of my favorite places on the planet.

I grew up at the end of a country road, past a sign that said "not a county road". Our road turned into a dirt road, then simply a dead end. Across the "street" (err.. road?) was a large irrigation reservoir/ponding basin that become the backdrop of some of my fondest childhood memories. Over the years, the landscape changed a bit. Trees were pulled out, a fence was put up, pathways leveled, then covered with sand piles, stolen cars stashed on the back banks, weed fires burned on the front banks. But, over the years, the "lake" as we've always called it, has been a wonderful place to spend an hour or two.

During the summer, we'd take jars with us, and catch tadpoles or minnows. In the winter, we'd collect rocks. On any given day we'd see a muskrat, a crawdad, squirrels, coyotes, spiders, lizards, ducks, coots, fish, snakes and occasionally even a water turtle. Because the lake was particularly large, running/jogging/walking around it made for good exercise. It's about 1 mile to walk a full lap around the lake. It's still my Dad's favorite workout (he runs it).

This weekend was a lovely one devoid of set plans and prior engagements, so while the hubby caught up on some morning zzz's, the munchkin and I went to visit my parents and spent some time at the lake. It was such a nice way to spend the morning. Here is "the lake":
We studied a resident worm...
While we we walking, we startled a coyote who was so frightened he took to the water to escape us! Poor guy!We also saw a neat spider. (I don't mind running into spiders in THEIR natural habitat, I just don't like 'em in MY habitat!)I love sharing "the lake" with my kiddo, now that I'm "grown" (I'm still not convinced I'm a grown up. It snuck up on me.)

  3. Awww, memories! I remeber those days of walking around the lake and talking about the crushes of the week. :) Good times...I don't feel like a grown-up yet either, just a kid in an old person's body.
