May Beauty Bargains & Bummers

So, I won't act like it's any secret that I'm constantly on the search for great cosmetics at a reasonable price, and my recent discovery of a number of YouTube beauty "gurus" hasn't helped slow my little obsession.  I thought, since I've already caved and spent the money on a few items, it might be nice to share them so that I could point out what I found to be awesome and save others from spending their hard earned money on sub par products that are cheap for a reason.  You don't always get what you pay for- but on the flip side, sometimes you get more!

I'll start with the products I really liked:
First up, possibly my favorite (and the most recent purchase), E.L.F. (Eyes Lips Face) Contour and Blush compact, purchased at Target for a meager $3.  When I spotted this, I immediately thought of how much it looked like the much pricier NARS version (ringing in at a whopping $39).  Both products are packaged almost identically and after trying out the E.L.F. version I feel like I can honestly take the NARS duo off of my "someday, when I have tons of money, I will definitely buy..." list!  The E.L.F. version is great!  Highly pigmented and offering wearable shades, I highly recommend it!

Next, is Laura Mercier's Flat Top brush.  This brush, available for half the price of comparable MAC or other department store brushes works great for liquid foundation application.  I've owned the brush for a little while now and it's been through several vigorous washings, and comes out like new each time.  The brushes are soft, but not too soft to be useful and allow you to buff foundation to a flawless finish.  This brush is also available at Target and will run you around $13.

And last, in the "likes" category, we have Wet-n-Wild's "Walking on Eggshells" eyeshadow trio.  I know, I know, you (and me both) haven't bought anything from Wet-n-Wild since, like, 6th grade.  But, after seeing so many YouTubers rave about how great this little eye shadow palette is, I had to give it a whirl, and for less than $3 at Wal-Mart, I wouldn't be out too much if they were all somehow wrong.  The catch was, it took me awhile to find the trio in stock, apparently, I wasn't the only one searching for it.  The colors make for a gorgeous neutral eye and I was shocked to discover they were highly pigmented and went on smoothly!  I'm going to have to give this trio two thumbs up!

And now for the products I wish I hadn't wasted my money on:
First, the Milani Lip Flash Full Coverage Shimmer Gloss Pencil.  I bought this at Target for a little over $6, but was disappointed to discover that it didn't really glide on and shine like a gloss, but much more like a slightly moist, wide metallic pencil.  The color just looks like "cheap" color on and I don't like the smell either.  Unfortunately, it's not something I'll be getting use out of.  (I could have bought the Walking on Eggshells trio AND the E.L.F. blush/bronzer for the same price!)

And second is the NYX Lip Smacking Fun Color Round Lipstick.  The lip color looked shiny and shimmery in the tube, but went on dry, thin and metallic.  Unfortunately, it will sit in my drawer until I eventually come to terms with the fact that I'm never going to use it, and ultimately be tossed out.  I'm trying to shorten that time line, but I estimate six months.  (At least I'm honest right?)

  1. If you go to the ELF website, they have a ton more things all for very cheap. I have used thier brushes, and they were a buck. The eye shadow brush I have had for about 2 years and still working great. Also if you sign up for their email list they always send free shipping and 50% off coupon codes.
